Supported Independent Living in Brisbane: What NDIS Participants Need to Know

Finding the right support at home can make everyday life safer and give you more opportunities to build skills. If you need substantial help throughout the day and overnight, you may have heard of Supported Independent Living, or SIL.

SIL is NDIS funding for support workers to help or supervise you with daily tasks in your home. It is not funding to buy a home or pay rent. The support is designed to help you live as independently as possible, with the amount and type of assistance based on your individual needs. NDIS

This guide explains what SIL can cover, who it may suit and how to explore your options in Brisbane.

What Is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living is a type of NDIS home and living support. It can fund support workers to provide help or supervision across the day and night. You might share a worker with other people in your home or need individual support, depending on your approved arrangement. NDIS

The focus is on support within your home. For one person, that might mean help getting ready in the morning and preparing meals. For another, it might involve supervision, support with household routines and assistance overnight.

SIL is commonly used in shared living arrangements, but a shared home is not the definition of SIL. The NDIA considers your disability-related support needs and whether SIL is the appropriate option for you. NDIS

What Can SIL Support Help With?

The support in an approved SIL arrangement can include help or supervision with tasks such as:

  • Personal care, including showering and dressing.
  • Preparing meals and eating.
  • Cleaning and other household routines.
  • Building skills for everyday life.
  • Support with safety and supervision at home.

The precise arrangement should reflect the supports approved in your plan and the services agreed with your provider. SIL should also create opportunities to develop skills and make choices wherever possible. NDIS

For example, a support worker may help someone prepare dinner by setting up ingredients, guiding parts of the task or assisting where needed. The level of help should suit that person’s abilities and preferences.

Who Might SIL Be Suitable For?

The NDIS describes SIL as an option for people who need a support worker available 24 hours a day, including overnight, with substantial help during the day and some level of help or supervision at other times. If you need only a few hours of support each day or week, another home and living arrangement may be more appropriate. NDIS

There is no single household or routine that suits everyone. When considering SIL, think about:

  1. What help you need during the day and overnight.
  2. Which tasks you can do independently and where you need assistance.
  3. Whether shared or individual support would meet your needs.
  4. Your preferences about where and with whom you live.
  5. What other home and living supports you have considered.

You can discuss these questions with your my NDIS contact. If your plan includes a Support Coordinator, they may help you explore providers and how a proposed arrangement fits your plan. NDIS

Does SIL Pay for Accommodation, Rent or Groceries?

No. SIL pays for eligible support worker assistance. It does not pay your rent, groceries, utilities or other ordinary living expenses. This distinction matters when comparing homes and providers because you need to understand both the support arrangement and any separate housing costs. NDIS

Some people also have funding for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). SDA concerns specially designed housing for eligible participants, while SIL concerns the support workers who help a person in their home. A participant may have one or both types of support in their plan, depending on their needs. NDIS

Likewise, help with a housing application or understanding a lease is different from SIL support. EnablePath describes these tasks on its Accommodation and Tenancy Support page. SIL Accommodation Brisbane

How Do You Explore SIL Options in Brisbane?

Start with your own support needs and living preferences. If SIL is already included in your NDIS plan, review what has been approved before discussing an arrangement with a provider. If you are exploring home and living supports for the first time, speak with your my NDIS contact about the available options and how to ask for them. NDIS

When you contact a potential SIL provider, ask for clear answers about the actual arrangement:

  • What support is available during the day and overnight?
  • Would support workers be shared or individual?
  • How are workers matched with participants?
  • How will my preferences and daily routine be respected?
  • What happens when a worker is unavailable?
  • What support costs and housing costs would be separate?
  • Can I review the service agreement before making a decision?

If the provider also arranges housing, ask for the housing or tenancy terms separately. The NDIS advises SIL providers to establish a service agreement for supports and a tenancy agreement when there is a housing arrangement. NDIS

Is EnablePath Registered to Provide SIL?

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission’s provider register lists EnablePath Support Services as an approved registered provider and includes Supported Independent Living among its approved registration groups. The register also lists conditions associated with its registration. NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission

Registration tells you which support groups a provider is approved to deliver. It does not tell you whether a particular home has a vacancy or whether an arrangement is right for you. Discuss your plan, support needs, preferences and current availability directly with the provider before making a decision.

You can contact EnablePath Support Services to ask about its current SIL support options in the Brisbane area. Its Accommodation and Tenancy Support page explains the separate assistance it offers with housing applications and tenancy matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SIL the same as living in a group home?

No. SIL describes funded support workers, not a particular building. Support is often shared by people living together, but your approved arrangement depends on your needs. NDIS

Can I use SIL funding to pay rent?

No. Rent, groceries and ordinary household bills are separate from SIL support funding. NDIS

Do I need SIL in my NDIS plan before starting funded SIL support?

Your NDIS plan needs to include the appropriate home and living support funding. Speak with your my NDIS contact if you are unsure what your plan includes or want to explore SIL. NDIS

Can a Support Coordinator help me find a SIL provider?

Yes, if Support Coordination is included in your plan. A coordinator can help you compare providers and discuss how proposed supports fit your funding and preferences.
